Qse is a Java program that makes Quikscript easier to use. It provides an environment in which a document can be typed. It has menu items to allow the document to be previewed or printed without needing to issue operatingsystem commands. It has the ability to act on %include references to other files, pulling them into the document when it is to be previewed or printed, allowing sections or styles to be prepared and stored separately. It has a mailmerge facility, capable of using a list of names and addresses or other fields to expand a letter proforma into individualized letters. It allows a document to be converted to PDF or, with less success, to HTML.
Qse is distributed as a self-installing executable:
| Unix shell script | MS executable | |
|---|---|---|
| Full editor, including additional font files (~5.6 Mb) | Qse-install.bin | Qse.exe |
| Editor without additional font files (~1.8 Mb) | Qse-smallinstall.bin | smallQse.exe |
Qse is written in Java, for portability. You will need to have a recent version of Java installed on your machine to run Qse. You will also need a PostScript previewer, such as ghostscript, ghostview, or gsview to see how the documents will print.
Installation instructions are also provided.
A small number of changes have been made in this release of Qse. They affect the display of dialog panels which on some operating systems previously did not correctly place or size one or more text-fields when the panel was first displayed. The problem was evident in some Linux environments but is now believed to be corrected. There has been no change to Quikscript itself.
