Ten Thousand Steps

...is how far you should walk every day!

If you are fit, or are not fit, or want to be fit, this is a good target to aim for if you want to see real improvements in your health and fitness.

But just how far is 10,000 steps?

I can only give you my own experience. Ten thousand steps takes about 1 hour and twenty minutes of brisk walking. You will not get even close to this if the only walking you do is around your office building and walking to and from your car each day. I manage a walk of around 5000 steps from 6am each morning, but there isn't enough time for more on work days. A second daily walk at work is my current aim.

ADFA is a great place to walk. Here is an example. It isn't ten thousand steps, but it would make a big difference to your daily step count and takes me less than 25 minutes:

Note: If you are unfit, please take your doctor's advice before doing this or any other exercise - I am not medically qualified and am only telling you what works for me. Walking is, however, recognised as a highly suitable form of exercise for people who are trying to counter years of inactivity.

The 'official' Ten Thousand Steps website offers the following advice:

Daily walking has made a significant difference to my health and fitness. It was almost too late for me (I had Cardiac Bypass Surgery in 2003 and cannot recommend that as a lifestyle choice). Please don't let that happen to you...
